The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of student records and applies to students enrolled in higher education institutions as well as K-12 students. Educational agencies or institutions that receive funds under programs administered by the Secretary of Education are required to comply with FERPA. Institutions which violate the Act can face with the withdrawal of federal funding.

Most educational institutions must also comply with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), and other mandates.
